Marquette, Michigan – September 22, 2006 – United States Attorney Margaret M. Chiara announced that on September 20, 2006, after a two-day trial, a federal jury found Defendant William Jaynes Simmons, age 22, of Baraga, Michigan, guilty of two counts of sexual abuse of a minor and two counts of abusive sexual contact. Simmons was found to have engaged in sexual acts and sexual contact with a 14 year-old child at his residence, located within the boundaries of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, on several occasions between February and April of 2006. Simmons faces up to 15 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, up to three years of supervised release, and a mandatory $400 special assessment. Sentencing is scheduled for January 5, 2007. United States Attorney Chiara commended Special Agent Paul Cowley of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as well as officers of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Police Department,for their exceptional work on the case. The case was prosecuted on behalf of the United States of America by Assistant United States Attorneys Paul D. Lochner, Leslie A. Hagen, and Maarten Vermaat.
