FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2008 - GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Larry Provell Glenn III, 25, of Niles, was sentenced yesterday to 15 years in prison for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, U.S. Attorney Charles R. Gross announced today.
Glenn pled guilty on October 10, 2007, to being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. On May 30, 2007, an officer of the Niles Police Department observed Glenn discharge a Hans-Hermann Weihrauch .38 special/.357 Magnum revolver in the direction of a group of individuals in Niles, Michigan. Glenn was apprehended shortly after fleeing the scene on foot. The loaded revolver was recovered behind a bush, where Glenn had discarded it. Glenn was indicted by a federal grand jury on August 9, 2007.

Due to his three prior felony convictions for battery and drug distribution, Glenn qualified as an Armed Career Criminal under federal law and was subject to a mandatory minimum term of imprisonment of 15 years.

In addition to the 15 years in prison, Chief U.S. District Judge Robert Holmes Bell ordered Glenn to serve five years of supervised release and to pay a $1,000 fine and a $100 special assessment.

U.S. Attorney Gross commended the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Niles Police Department for their work in the case. Their joint investigation was undertaken as part of the FBI Violent Crime Task Force. Members of the FBI Violent Crime Task Force include the Benton Harbor Police Department, the Benton Township Police Department, the Berrien County Sheriff's Department and the St. Joseph Police Department. This case was prosecuted on behalf of the United States of America by Assistant U.S. Attorney Elisa Castrolugo.
