Saginaw Man Convicted on Federal Child Pornography Charges
United States Attorney Terrence Berg announced today that 71-year-old Wyman Wright, of Saginaw, Michigan, was found guilty yesterday by a federal jury in Bay City on charges of receipt and possession of child pornography,
The jury deliberated for less than one hour before returning the verdict, concluding a week long trial before United States District Judge Thomas L. Ludington.
The evidence presented at trial showed that Wright was downloading child pornography from the Internet using peer-2-peer file trading software. A forensic analysis of Wright’s computer revealed more than 850 images and video files of child pornography stored on the defendant’s hard drive. Wright confessed to organizing the child pornography into file folders according to his interests, with labels such as “animals,” “bondage,” and “young.”
United States Attorney Berg said, “Child pornography is nothing more than snapshots of child sexual abuse. We will continue unfailing in our commitment to aggressively prosecute any individuals engaged in crimes against children in the Eastern District of Michigan.”
Berg commended the work of the Mid-Michigan Computer Crimes Task Force, comprised of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Saginaw Township Police Department, and Bay City Police Department, for its efforts to combat the sexual exploitation of children.
A sentencing date has been set for October 26, 2009. Wright faces a mandatory minimum of five years' and a maximum of 20 years' imprisonment on each of the six counts of receiving child pornography and up to ten years imprisonment on the possession charge. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Shane N. Waller.
