Hannahville Assailant Sentenced to Prison

MARQUETTE, MI—Joel Thomas Smith, 20, of Wilson, Michigan, a member of the Hannahville Indian Community, was sentenced to 36 months in federal prison for assault with a dangerous weapon, U.S. Attorney Donald A. Davis announced today. In addition to the prison term, Senior U.S. District Judge R. Allan Edgar ordered Smith to serve three years of supervised release following his release from prison and to pay a $100 special assessment. This past June, Smith pleaded guilty to a federal indictment charging him with assault with a dangerous weapon. The charge stemmed from an incident that occurred on the Hannahville Indian Community reservation on October 26, 2008, during which Smith assaulted his teenage girlfriend and threatened to stab her in the throat.

U.S. Attorney Davis commended the Hannahville Tribal Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation for their work in this case. This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul D. Lochner.
