Alvin M. Murray, aka "Heavy D Bandit" Detained
On Tuesday, July 22, 2008, officers from the Dearborn Police Department arrested a suspect believed to be the "Heavy D Bandit." At the time of his arrest, the suspect was about to enter a bank.
On Wednesday, July 23, 2008, a federal complaint was sworn out by a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent charging Alvin Michael Murray, 51, of the bank robbery committed on July 21, 2008 at a Fifth Third Bank in Dearborn. As provided in the affidavit for the federal complaint, Murray had confessed to the February 21, 2008 bank robbery and acknowledged he was the "Heavy D Bandit."
On Thursday, July 24, 2008, Murray appeared in U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Michigan for a detention hearing. At that time, Murray consented to detention and his preliminary exam was scheduled for August 5, 2008.
"For the citizens of the Detroit area who toil each day to make a living and provide for their families, it is comforting to know that individuals who enrich themselves through illegal means will be arrested and prosecuted," commented Assistant Special Agent in Charge Edward J. Hanko, FBI Detroit Division.
The FBI would like to express its gratitude for the hard work and diligence of local and state agencies in the efforts to apprehend this serial bank robber.
